Essentials of Management
Shoe leather can only take you so far.
Many a professional manager got to be where they are today through a combination of shoe leather and natural talent. And while there is absolutely no substitute for these, it’s important to master all dimensions of the management role.
Leriot has identified seven disciplines that are essential to successful management. Although each of our private programs touches on one or more of these disciplines, Essentials of Management goes deep into the entire set.
By the end of this program, participants will have a firm understanding of each discipline and will have an action plan to improve on those areas where they’ve identified a need for improvement.
The seven essential disciplines are:
- Plan – This is really about creating your future. An effective plan contains an assessment of the historic and present day realities, an articulation of future goals and the steps needed to reach them.
- Communicate – An ability to communicate effectively is as close as one can come to a silver bullet. Understanding how to convey critical information and calibrate it in a way that your audience interprets it as you intended is an invaluable skill.
- Organize – Managing a complex system, be it a computer network, sales force or corporation, requires an ability to assess available resources and deploy them in such a way that maximizes their effectiveness.
- Build Staff – You need high-achieving individuals who can work together as a team in support of common goals. The alchemy of a strong and dynamic staff is a unique advantage not easily duplicated by the competition.
- Set Goals – The fact that goals are important isn’t news. Less well known is how to identify which goals are essential to an organization’s success and how to implement a system that ensures those goals are achieved.
- Track Results – The plan is in place and your team is in hot pursuit of their goals. But along the way, the sands of the marketplace shift. Key milestones help you judge whether a course correction might be needed.
- Lead – Too few people do what they say they’ll do. The first step is to operate with integrity. Your team feels empowered, valued and is unafraid of failure. The successful leader creates an environment that breeds success.
